Is that summer we smell in the air? Clearly it is! And in Japan, summer means FIREWORKS!
As a result, here at AJET we’ve compiled a list of the main upcoming fireworks festivals this summer. It’s time to get that evening picnic gear ready!
This festival over the sea is one of the most popular in Niigata Prefecture, and with good reason – it’s absolutely stunning!
Date: Thursday, 26th July 2018
Time: 7:30pm – 9:10pm
Location: Kashiwazaki Central Beach, Minatomachi Seaside Park area
The biggest fireworks in the Prefecture, and the absolute must-see if you’re here for it! Over 20,000 fireworks are used in this truly spectacular festival.
Date: Thursday, 2nd & Friday, 3rd August 2018
Time: 7:20pm – 9:15pm
Location: Shinano River under the Chousei Bridge
- Benten Fireworks. Nou Itoigawa
Beautiful fireworks display firing off from the sacred Benten rock in Nou, Itoigawa.
Come join the JETs down south for some sea, sun and fireworks.
If you come earlier in the day you can go hunting for real jade on the beaches , simply go for a swim or check out the magma geo park museum or explore the beautiful rivers and mountains.

The fireworks are the culmination of an amazing three-day festival, held conveniently the weekend after new JET arrivals!
Date: Sunday, 12th August 2018
Time: TBC
Location: Shinano River, near Bandai City
The final summer fireworks on Sado, with Tarai boat races and Kojishima dances. If you missed Earth Celebration, why not pop over for this?
Date: Saturday, 25th August 2018
Time: finishes at 10:00pm
Location: Ogi Port, Sado Island
A 400-year-old festival, with the country’s largest single firework (yonshakudama)?! Why wouldn’t you go?
Date: Sunday, 9th September – Monday, 10th September 2018
Time: 7:45pm – 10:20pm (Yonshakudama launch at 10:00pm on both nights)
Location: Katakai, Ojiya
